In Ithaca, family-run Italian places are busiest on weekend evenings and around holidays, when reservations or call-ahead seating are worth it. BYOB is common at smaller restaurants in some states, with a modest corkage fee or none at all; the listing or a quick call will tell you. Wing-and-pizza shops across New York do most of their business by delivery and price wings by the piece or in fixed counts, with sauce heat adjustable on request. Catering trays, party pizzas and sheet pies need a day's notice at most places, and more around big game days.

The business lists hours on 7 days of the week. On most of those days it is open 4 pm–4 am. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. You can reach D.P. Dough at (607) 277-7772; calling is usually the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or directions. Its website is dpdough.com, where you may find menus, price lists or booking options.

Its Google rating is 3.8 out of 5 from 361 reviews, a solid but mixed picture; reading the most recent reviews will tell you what to expect.

Ithaca is in New York, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Traffic in Ithaca peaks on weekday mornings and afternoons, so allow extra time then. Addresses read from the street number up to the city, state abbreviation and five-digit ZIP code; the map link on this page shows the exact spot.

As a prodigal East Coast daughter who lamented the dearth of calzones out west, I was excited about a place that specialized in them but ultimately liked this place more in concept than in delivery. For starters, despite a prime Collegetown location, it was totally empty in the late afternoon and without much atmosphere. The counter staff gave the impression of having somewhere else they would rather be, though they were relatively quick with my order (I did the Construction Zone with eggs, two kinds of cheese, and tots). The filling was hearty enough but bland, as was the dough, which reminded me of soft ciabatta. Thank heavens for the accompanying buffalo sauce, something they do get very right here. The portion was good-sized but overpriced. I took half home and breathed some life into it with spicy cheese curd the next night. I’d be willing to try more menu items for the variety but won’t rush back for the quality.

The sizes of wings provided are downright pathetic. They have a soggy texture, and a good enough sauce. For just six of them, the cost listed on the menu was an already high $6.99. When I actually ordered, it turned out that the menu I was provided with, and the actual cost was an outrageously shameless $8.45. The service was great despite this mixup, and the guy working there was real nice, throwing another two wings in. Even with this increased value the order was an utter ripoff, with the smallest wings I’ve seen in my life. I understand that not every place has great wings, but few have such high prices for so lacking wings. It’s enough to put me off D.P. Dough altogether, even if the calzones are passable.

I ordered the spinner zone calzone (spinach, mozzarella, ricotta, garlic) and there was barely any spinach and no ricotta. I was so disappointed. There was also not enough sauce to go with the food. Photo of what I ordered versus what I got. Also had 0 flavor.

Ordered Big Red Zone (chicken bacon ranch) takeout in person. Still tastes pretty good after 15 min walk back to my apartment even though it's lukewarm at this point. Marinara is just the right amount for a calzone although I'd prefer a warm sauce. Menu price $10.75 already includes tax, which is nice for diverse students at Cornell.

After a long day of hiking, then getting clean after we ran out of places to eat. Thankfully D.P. Dough was open at 11 and delivered our food. We ordered online and were unsure if they were really open (because we've never experienced a food place open so late) but after a little while we got the call that the driver was at the hotel! They saved us and our poor empty stomachs. The calzones were really good too! We got a simple order and they were exactly what we needed. Definitely going to use them again now that we know they are open so late!
